Michael Jackson feat. Notorious B.I.G. - This Time Around (1995)

Bit of a treat for you today as two of the greatest of all time hook up for a collaboration on MJ's half Greatest Hits, half new music album from 1995, HIStory.

While it won't make many best MJ songs lists that's more a testament to the strength of his catalogue than a diss to this song. The production sounds a bit like something off Dangerous and would work perfectly well as a solo song, but then Big comes along at the end with a smooth as butter verse to cap things off.

Rest in peace to two of the best to ever do it. Happy Sunday.

  1. I think this is a really cool song, it's got that mid 90s MJ production that makes it sound like he's singing over some music from Sonic 2. I love the keyboard bass guitar tones - they are technically very "cheesy" but they create a really cool, kinda otherworldly atmosphere. It's kinda sad to hear him slipping into the paranoid man he would become in his later years, but the attitude it brings out sometimes sounds class (MJ saying "I ain't taking no shit"?!?!).

Makes me want to listen to Unbreakable too (the posthumous BIG guest spot).

    1. Thanks for your comment man! Yeah I know what you mean about that mid 90s MJ production - kind of sounds like a lot of Dangerous too. Did you know that MJ did some of the music for Sonic 3? Maybe you did and that's what you're getting at!
I really enjoyed that Unbreakable album, not as good as his previous obviously but by any other standards it was great!

  2. Wait WHAT! MJ did Sonic music? That's exactly the kind of trivia I love, how have I not heard this? That's incredible.

When I got Invincible I was so excited after the first two tracks as MJ finally sounded modern, but (following on from my comment just now about Snoop) it's like he took the CD length as a challenge. Thriller - 9 tracks, classic. Invincible - 16 tracks, totally loses it long before the end.

Yeah I even thought Dangerous was a bit long, but just about got away with it
